Coolcaringer Engineering - One Watt LED Caving Lamps.

The 1 Watt Luxeon Star LED provides a convenient means of building an LED caving lamp when fitted into a recycled Oldham housing with a current regulator. The result is a robust lamp with a good light that draws about 350mA from the battery. This lamp uses a linear regulator for simplicity as when used with Coolcaringer Engineering NiMH or Li-Ion batteries, there is little difference between the battery voltage and that needed to run the LED. Consequently, efficiency (losses mainly due to heating of the LED and regulator circuit) is maintained.

Shown here on the right are three 1 Watt lamps. The black and yellow rimmed lamps use the Luxeon LXHL-NWE8 LED with integral collimating optic whereas the red rimmed lamp uses a 1W Luxeon Star LED with a separate collimating optic.

The lamps have no on/off switch, relying solely on the connector for connection/disconnection.
